Reading, Writing and Language Arts— Mastery of language both written and oral is a powerful tool that provides children not only greater understanding through enhancement of their ability to analyze the world around them but also a sense of power over their environment. The Academy’s language arts program expands the skills with which students express themselves and instills in them a love of language through the study of challenging literature in a variety of genres and styles and from a variety of historical periods and cultures in student-centered discussions as well as through abundant and varied exercises in written assignments including formal essays beginning in the early grade levels.

History and Social Studies— Knowledge of events that occurred in the past aid in the understanding of how to effect positive change in our world in the future especially as our global community shrinks further and further due to advances in technology.
History and Social Studies at SMA capture the excitement that is inherent in their study as teachers and students work together by analyzing geography, politics, economics, demography, social and cultural systems, and arts and ideas and how these studies related to continuity and change.
By the time our students have graduated from The Academy their studies will have taken them on a journey covering ancient and modern times in American, European, and World history with special attention to Latin American and Chinese cultures.

Math— The universal language of mathematics unites our multi-cultural campus. Our curriculum enhances students’ abilities to solve problems while helping them gain confidence and pride in their ability to meet daily challenges. It ultimately prepares students for college level courses while imbuing appreciation of the necessity of mathematics in all areas of life. Heavy use of technology as well as highly varied teaching strategies in the courses offer a prized education in mathematics.

Science— SMA’s science curriculum involves hands-on training and cooperative group settings in order to capture the student’s interest in the world around them. A fun environment is carefully constructed in the classroom and laboratory in order to peak students’ curiosity and keep them motivated to ask questions and learn as teachers help students discover their own answers and inspire them to think critically and solve problems.
Students explore science in a productive manner that enhances their ability to implement the scientific method. Students are encouraged to utilize their own awareness and discernment to apply their findings to life around them.
The program is designed to ultimately prepare students for their future success in college science programs. As with the mathematics program, heavy use of technology aids students in learning techniques for data collection, analysis and research.

Art and Music— Spanish Mandarin Academy takes great pride in offering a fine arts curriculum that is unparalleled as far as cultural diversity is concerned. The program offers a fun and exciting atmosphere where students are free to enjoy self-expression while acquiring real skills in the media they are exposed to which ultimately lead to a great appreciation of art. Students then display and/or perform the works they have created in the major fine arts disciplines including drama, music (vocal, instrumental and theory), dance and visual arts (sculpture, sketching and painting).
Students also study art history covering all periods of time and all cultures with an emphasis on Spanish, Latin American, Chinese and American and European art.

Physical Education— Spanish Mandarin Academy places great importance on physical education with the goal of instilling in children the appreciation of a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise and a proper diet. The program teaches team-cooperation skills and sportsmanship as well as the skills necessary to succeed in practicing popular sports.

Camp— SMA’s summer camp is designed for children ages 4-11. Parents and children have a choice of one or both languages, a choice of weekly camp or monthly camp, and a choice of 4 to 11 hours per day: 7am to 6pm. It runs for 8 weeks: from Monday, June 25th to Friday, August 31st, 2012. Children will experience a FUN-FILLED, FULL-IMMERSION day with our native-Chinese- and native-Spanish-speaking teachers. Half the day will focus on Spanish and the other half will focus on Mandarin Chinese. Activities include oral (both listening and speaking), written and reading exercises as well as physical activities, all in the foreign language of your choice. Previous exposure to Spanish or Chinese is not required.
The goal is to introduce children to Spanish and Chinese while their minds are still “like sponges” and have a greater capacity to learn a second and third language than they will in later years. Younger children not only have a greater capacity to retain language, but also a greater ability to imitate sounds. While most activities require children to work in groups designed for fun, some of the activities are specifically designed for individual study with a focus on skill-building. Some of these activities include spelling, fine-tuned pronunciation, and short essay exercises.
Children love our summer camps!
